Farm Safety Day 2013 was held Friday, May 10 under the threat of rain, which didn’t dampen the spirits of the 261 Overton County fourth graders and 150 volunteers in attendance, under the organization of Gina Danner of Overton County Soil Conservation District.

 
Gov. Haslam announces intent to veto “Ag-Gag Bill”

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam said he plans to veto the so-called “Ag-Gag Bill” in a statement released Monday, May 13 regarding HB 1191/SB 1248.

“Agriculture is the number one industry in Tennessee,” Gov. Haslam stated. “Farmers play a vital role in our state’s economy, heritage, and history. I understand their concerns about large scale attacks on their livelihoods.

Ball named TDA director of Marketing over TAEP

Tennessee Department of Agriculture Commissioner Julius Johnson recently announced the appointment of Debbie Stepp Ball as director of marketing in the Market Development Division.

Johnson said, “Debbie is uniquely suited for this position at this point in the division’s history. I can’t imagine a more qualified person in terms of education, experience, and skills to help lead the division into its next phase of service for Tennessee agriculture. In addition to her private sector marketing experience, she has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing farming today and in the future. ”

Cheekwood Gardens earn national dogwood acclaim

Just in time for spring, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art’s treasured dogwood collection has been granted membership in the North American Plant Collection Consortium (NAPCC), making it the first NAPCC Collection in Tennessee. It is also the first dogwood collection in North America to be recognized by the organization.

TAEP Applications Now Available

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has released the 2013 application for the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program (TAEP). Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered between Saturday, June 1 and Friday, June 7. An important change again for this year is that requests for funding will now be approved based on applicant determined priorities instead of on a first come, first serve basis.

Overton County Sweeps State 4-H Shoot

On Saturday, April 6, three teams traveled to Dickson, TN to compete in the State 4-H Air rifle and BB shoot. The Green Possums, one of the teams that represents Overton County, won the contest with a close score of 2238, beating out the second place Dickson county team. Members of this team include: Andrew Gothard, Josiah Spickard, Haley Melton, Jessie York, Sam Rajbundit, Blake Shepherd, Austin Hummel and Joshua Tinkel.

Cattle Bloat

Bloat, or frothy bloat, is a life-threatening disease in cattle that can occur when animals ingest young, vegetative legumes. The most common legume grazed in Tennessee is white clover, but cattle can also get bloat from grazing alfalfa and red clover. All forages are about three weeks ahead of schedule due to the warm temperatures we’ve had and white clover is growing very strong this spring.
