When a 1957 DeSoto Adventurer convertible crossed the block at the recent Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ, my mind went back to my childhood when I dreamed of driving a finned wonder.
My Dad went to Qualls’ Used Cars in Rickman all the time when I was a kid. Sometimes he went there when he needed parts from the junk yard, sometimes he went there to see what Hollis was “tradin’ on”, and sometimes just to shoot the breeze with Hollis and the guys who hung out there. Even when I got older, if Dad was late getting home of the evening, that was where I could call and find him.
Anyway, when I went with Dad to the junk yard, I would look around the cars and trucks to see what was there. One day, I spotted the most awesome car I had ever seen. It was long and low, a 2-door hardtop with huge fins with three tail lamps on each.
I asked my Dad what it was, and he told me it was a DeSoto.
